We discover the treasures of the Sierra de Guara

The Sierra de Guara is one of the most surprising areas of the province of Huesca. It is an area that is neither the Pyrenees nor a valley on the way to the Ebro. It is a mountain range with its own personality in the foothills of the great mountain range where countless attractive places await us, from beautiful villages to landscapes for adventure. Let’s go through them below!

The Sierra de Guara, a protected area

In the extension of the Sierra de Guara there are different protected areas and for different reasons. For example, there is a large area of landscape that is the Natural Park and Canyons of the Sierra de Guara. There are also areas that belong to the Río Vero Cultural Park.

And, in addition to all this, there are monuments and towns classified as assets of cultural interest. From one of these towns we are going to start the visit to the area.

Alquézar

The town of Alquézar is one of the most beautiful towns in all of Aragon. It is a nucleus dominated in its highest part by the collegiate church and the walls of the old Arab fortress that still gives it its name today.

At its feet you will see a labyrinth of streets adapted to the hillside with countless houses and mansions that have managed to keep the appearance of the past. A delight of a place!

The Olvena bridge

The eastern end of the Sierra de Guara is defined by the Cinca River, which comes from the Pyrenees, neither more nor less than from the Ordesa National Park.

Well, at the height of the territory of the sierra is the town of Olvena and there a historic bridge: the Puente de la Sierra. Legend has it that it was built in one night by the devil.

Roldán waterfall

At the other end of the Sierra de Guara, in the west, is another of the most emblematic elements of this landscape: the impressive Roldán waterfall. It is made up of two great rocks that can be climbed relatively easily to contemplate a spectacular panorama, with the city of Huesca itself at our feet.

Rodellar, place to climb in the Sierra de Guara

It may not be well known to the general public, but it is a benchmark for climbing enthusiasts. And it is that in the vicinity of the remote village of Rodellar, in the heart of the Sierra de Guara, is one of the sets of natural walls suitable for all levels of climbers.

Climbing is not the only adventure sport practiced in the Sierra de Guara. In fact, the most popular is canyoning. In this landscape of rocks carved by aggressive water courses there are numerous ravines ideal for this sport and also for different levels.

The Coats of Lecina

Through these ravines it is easy to find groups of hikers hiking and canyoning, but thousands of years ago prehistoric man walked here. Numerous shelters have been found with cave paintings in the Levantine style, declared a World Heritage Site. So do not think that the cave art is the Altamira cave and little else.

Now we propose a good portion of hiking, almost mountaineering, to ascend to the highest point of the Sierra de Guara, El Tozal, which rises to 2077 meters high. It is an excursion through which you pass through a series of spectacular viewpoints and, in addition, it allows you to discover the incredible difference in vegetation between the north and south slopes.

The Bierge jump

And after so much touring the Sierra de Guara we take you to a place where you can rest and refresh yourself. The Bierge waterfall is a natural pool that is very popular in summer.

It is a great point and end to this intense itinerary through the province of Huesca, in which there has been everything: heritage, history, legends, hiking, climbing, ravines and even cave paintings thousands of years old.
