In the province of Malaga (only 13 kilometers from the capital), this municipality of the famous and touristic Costa del Sol is protected by a bay and a mountain range. In the following article we will tell you all about Torremolinos, an old fishing village today the perfect destination for unforgettable vacations.

Brief history of Torremolinos

Torremolinos is one of the most famous towns on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Its history is not so well known, despite being very long. The Romans settled in a territory within the municipality of Torremolinos, where they built a road that connected Cádiz (Gades) with Málaga (Malaca).

Around the year 1300 the Nasrid built a defense tower at the end of the current Calle San Miguel. Its name: Torre de los Molinos and from it arises the name of the town. It is a 12 meter high structure with two floors of windows to watch over the sea.

After the Christian conquest of the Kingdom of Granada, Torremolinos was the target of pirates until the 18th century, something that did not allow the development of the town. This later led to the construction of the Castle of Santa Clara, with a battery of cannons directed towards the waters.

In the first half of the 19th century, the fledgling city was almost completely rebuilt. According to the chronicles, there were 14 flour mills in the area. The decline of the milling industry began in 1923 and it was at that time that the fishing village developed.

One of the darkest times in the history of Torremolinos takes place during the Spanish Civil War. In 1938 some 4000 Francoism prisoners passed through the concentration camp located in the town.

After the war, Torremolinos’ moment of splendor would arrive, thanks to the “tourist boom” and the construction of renowned hotels. Already in the 50s, well-known characters such as Salvador Dalí, Brigitte Bardot, Frank Sinatra or Anthony Queen, among others, would arrive.

Considered a libertine and glamorous center at the same time, Torremolinos continued its success among celebrities until the 1990s. Today it continues to be an enclave chosen for its beautiful beaches, its nightlife and its landscapes.
