Montepulciano : charm in Tuscany

Montepulciano is on top of a hill, overlooking a fabulous landscape. A place as beautiful as it is quiet, ideal to rest and disconnect from the busy life, to relax on its cobbled streets or breathe fresh air among its pine forests and hills covered with olive trees and vineyards.

Also, this is a place with a long history. Etruscans and Romans occupied this area and its strategic location would cause fights between Siena and Florence centuries later. As early as the 16th century, Montepulciano would attract humanists and also notable and powerful figures. For this reason, today the urban area of ​​this beautiful town is full of authentic architectural gems.

What to see in Montepulciano?

1. Piazza Grande

It is the heart of Montepulciano and the first place you must visit. The Piazza Grande, of enormous architectural beauty, was built between the 15th and 16th centuries.

This beautiful monumental complex includes some of the town’s treasures, especially the cathedral and the Palazzo Comunale, which has a beautiful Gothic façade topped by a tall tower.

2. Nobili-Tarugi Palace

It is located on the north side of the Piazza Grande. It is a wonderful building built in the 16th century. This palace was the residence of the Nobili family and later of the Tarugi family.

3. The cathedral of Montepulciano

It is the most outstanding temple in Montepulciano. The Cathedral of Santa María Assunta was built between 1586 and 1680, as part of a project by Orvietano Ippolito Scalza.

Its exterior is sober, however,  inside, with three naves, interesting works of art are discovered. Highlights a large triptych with the  Assumption of the Virgin  by Taddeo di Bartolo, from the year 1401

4. The Communal Palace

The Palazzo Comunale is  a Gothic-style building built during the 13th century, although it was remodeled in the 14th century. To this day it continues to function as the town hall.

It is interesting to admire its exterior, with its battlements and its tower. But the best thing is, precisely, to climb the tower, from which you can contemplate spectacular views of the Tuscan fields.

5. The Palazzo Contucci

This palace is one of the best examples of the Tuscan Renaissance style. It was built by Antonio da Sangallo around 1500. It is another of the beautiful buildings that are in front of the Pizza Grande.

In addition to admiring its architecture, you can visit its large winery, which is open for tastings of the excellent wines of the region and also for regular visits.
