Everything You Need To Know To Travel Alone

Everything you need to know to travel alone

You have always wanted to travel to a certain city, but you cannot convince anyone to accompany you on your adventure. Before staying without knowing one of the destinations that you most yearn to visit, isn’t it better to leave alone? This idea may scare you if you’ve never gone on a journey alone. Therefore,  we give you the advice you need to travel alone and enjoy the adventure.

1. Travel with specialized companies

There are companies that organize trips exclusively for people who do it alone. In some cases  they are more aimed at those who do not rule out finding love during the trip. Other times, on the other hand, they offer a wide range of possibilities depending on what the tourist’s objective is: learning languages, partying or getting to know a city culturally, among others.

2. Save the big cities for later

If it is the first time that you venture to travel alone, the best thing is to look for a trip of a few days, thus you prove yourself. In fact, there are very interesting destinations that can be seen practically in a weekend.

In Spain we could name, for example, Salamanca, a World Heritage Site because of the multitude of corners and historical buildings that it houses, such as the Plaza Mayor, its cathedrals or the university building. But there are thousands of possibilities: Seville, Barcelona, Segovia, San Sebastián …

Regarding abroad, a good destination can be Prague, which has three essential areas (the Castle, the Old Town and Josefov). Different, but just as charming, is Dubrovnik, a partly walled city and fashionable for being one of the settings for Game of Thrones. Or, if you like art, you will love Florence.

Depending on what you are looking for, you can choose from infinite possibilities. But yes, when traveling alone it is always best to avoid those areas that may be conflictive.

3. Do not close yourself to meeting new people

If solo travel is getting a bit uphill for you, there are multiple ways to meet new people. For example, signing up for a tour. In this way, you will not only have the opportunity to communicate with other travelers, but you will also be able to see first-hand the most important points of the city you visit.

Another option is to use applications in which you will find multiple groups that organize activities of all kinds. Or you can do mealsurfing, that is, go to eat at private homes or restaurants that have communal tables.

4. If you are traveling alone, choose your accommodation well

In relation to the previous advice, try to find alternative accommodation to the hotel. These may offer more amenities, but allow you to meet fewer people. Although if you do, do not forget to let yourself be seen in the common areas.

A Bed & Breakfast, on the other hand, will put you in contact with the hosts of the place, who will surely be willing to offer you advice and directions, as well as to share a pleasant conversation with you. If to this advantage you add their cheapest prices …

Neither hotel nor Bed & Breakfast? Well then you have another option, the hostels. In them you will probably share a room with other travelers who are in the same situation as you.

5. Maintain communication with yours

It is fine to disconnect, but you should not do it completely, since being the first time you travel alone your loved ones will be worried about you. Hence, it is advisable to give signs of life from time to time. In addition, nowadays, with all the possibilities offered by a mobile with internet (WhatsApp, Skype, Facebook…) you have no possible excuse.

On the other hand, it is advisable to leave a copy of your itinerary with your family or a friend with the address and telephone number of the place where you are going to stay.
