Discover the Bioparc of Valencia

The Bioparc of Valencia is one of the most interesting zoos in the world. Nestled in the old course of the river Turia, among the current gardens of the same name, you can find a small piece of Africa that you will love. Will you accompany us for a walk through it?

To the west of the Jardin del Turia, in Valencia, is one of the most unique and interesting zoos in the world. It is the Bioparc, a zoo that has about 100,000 square meters in which attempts have been made to replicate different natural habitats for animal and plant species on the African continent.

The Bioparc

These replicated habitats reproduce different places in the equatorial forest, the African savannah or Madagascar. To do this, they use African vegetation and combine it with compatible elements of the local flora. Caves and replicas of huge rocks have been built in which elephants, gorillas and lemurs have found their home.

In this way, in this place you can walk among baobabs, lakes and waterfalls, as well as see fearsome crocodiles, birds of all colors and innocent baby giraffes surrounded by their entire family. And all recreating Africa, so that not only the visitor has the feeling of being on the African continent, but that the animals can feel comfortable in an environment similar to their natural habitat.

The Bioparc is a state-of-the-art zoo in which each animal or group of animals is separated by lakes, streams or rocks, and not by cages or bars. He has chosen to use a multi- species enclosure system in which animals of different species coexist in the same enclosure, so that everything is more natural. Of course, the Bioparc keepers have ensured that the coexistence of these animals is peaceful.

What animals can be seen?

In this park, you can see different species such as mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, predatory animals, the famous and emblematic elephants, giraffes with their characteristic long necks, impressive hippos, among others.

The zoo is divided into four areas: African savanna, equatorial forest, African wetlands, and Madagascar. Each one is destined to a natural environment, with its typical animals and vegetation. Furthermore, an attempt has been made to respect the social conditions of each species as much as possible.

For this reason, animals that have a group habitat system are surrounded by more animals of their species, those that are grouped in pairs live in pairs and solitary animals have a large space just for themselves. Do you want to know what animals you can see in each of these areas?

The African savanna

The part dedicated to the African savannah is one of the most varied in the entire park. There you can find rodents, such as mole rats or pygmy mice; prey animals, such as antelopes and gazelles; birds, such as the cape curlew and ostriches.

Madagascar

Madagascar is an island separate from the African continent that is home to species unique to the world. In the Bioparc you can see an area that replicates and exposes several of these landscapes and species.

There you will be able to contemplate an extraordinary collection with six different types of lemurs and their natural predator, the fossa, a feline of extraordinary beauty and impressive agility. In addition, it is possible to see flamingos and varis, a type of primate native to this island.
