Fuengirola, much more than Mediterranean beaches

Located in the province of Malaga,  Fuengirola has become one of the most recognized centers of tourism on the Costa del Sol. There are many who go there looking for sun and beach in the summer months, but few know that Fuengirola is a lot more than that and has other attractions. Do you want to come with us to discover them?

Fuengirola, a place full of things to see

In Fuengirola there are beaches of all kinds, of which you sink when entering and of those that you can walk half a kilometer without the water going past your waist. But, when we have already enjoyed them, what can be done in this town? Well let’s see some of the things:

Visit Sohail Castle

It has become the biggest attraction in the town. It dates from the year 900, that is, the first century, and has been named as a Site of Cultural Interest by UNESCO. Its architecture dates back to Roman times, although it later passed through Arab and Phoenician hands. The mixture in its forms and materials give a good account of it.

Although inside the castle there is nothing special to see, apart from some small flowerbeds that emulate a garden at the entrance of it, the views from this place are truly incredible.

If you visit it on a sunny day, something that can easily happen in Fuengirola, it is possible that from its top you can contemplate Morocco on the horizon.

There are two parts by which you can climb, although the back and closest to the beach is the most beautiful because it has a lawn and benches to sit on. As you go up, enjoy views of the sea and part of Fuengirola.

Discover the Bioparc

This is the name given to the Fuengirola zoo. When you hear zoo you can think of cages and animals in captivity, but no, the Bioparc in Fuengirola is special. Hundreds of species of animals live in an environment that simulates their natural habitat and in which they live at ease.

Do not worry, they will not be able to harm you, although the protection is not bars, but armored glasses that will allow you to see them up close as much as you want. In addition, all the species in the Bioparc are endangered animals and it is intended to help in their conservation in a natural place that makes them feel at home.

All are cared for and pampered in a special way, make no mistake about them. It is an ideal place to spend a day alone and, above all, with the family.

Tour the Sierra de Mijas

Fuengirola boasts an ideal climate, having a beach and a mountain at the same time. What more could a city ask for? The Sierra de Mijas is an ideal place to do a bit of sport on a path that will take you to the top and from where you can enjoy wonderful views of much of the Costa del Sol. Don’t miss it!

Mijas Pueblo

Few know that Fuengirola and Mijas Costa are almost the same thing, since they are only separated by a road. Mijas Pueblo is another of the municipalities that, although it has its own town hall, is considered a kind of hamlet.

It is a traditional Andalusian town, with narrow streets and houses painted white. Looking out over the Mediterranean, from its hermitage you can see the whole town, with Fuengirola and the sea down. Unrepeatable views that you will not want to miss and that you will hardly be able to forget.

As you can see, even in tourist places there is much to see. We also recommend visiting some ruins located in the Boliches area in Fuengirola. Some excavations where Roman ruins were found and which are known by the name of Site of the Secretary’s Estate. Do you sign up this city as your next destination?
