The construction of Rosenborg Castle began in 1606 by King Christian IV of Denmark. The following year it was finished. At first, it was thought as a country house for the monarch to spend the summers, since Christian IV first acquired the surrounding land and ordered the construction of a garden.

The construction fell into the hands of the architects Bertel Lange and Hans van Steenwinckel. Its style is Dutch Renaissance, very typical of the constructions of the time. However, it was undergoing variations until it was completed in 1624, the tower on the façade in 1634, and other small changes in 1833.

One of the most important parts of the castle are the king’s gardens. What’s more, they are almost as popular or even more popular than the castle itself, as they were designed before the building itself.

The gardens feature a pond and are surrounded by colorful tulips and roses, where it is common to see Danes and tourists sunbathing or having a picnic.

Both in the gardens and inside the castle there are numerous exhibitions on the history of Denmark, musical and theatrical shows. Many of them are temporary. In addition, there is a café in the gardens where traditional Danish food and local beer are served.
