The towns with the most curious names in Spain

Visiting the towns with the strangest names that Spain has can be quite an adventure.  We are going to present you some of the places whose names are extremely curious, surprising and almost impossible. Do not miss the opportunity to learn about the legends they hide and the jokes they have created in their name.

Plan a different vacation by taking a route through the towns of Spain with the strangest names. And, of course, take a curious souvenir in the form of a photo, with the sign of the town’s name. You will probably laugh a lot.

Although it seems a lie that a population can be baptized like that, the truth is that they do not usually honor their names. Some of these towns are worth a visit for their attractions or for the tranquility that is breathed in them.

Villapene, Lugo (Galicia)

The welcome sign of this place is worthy of being photographed and then uploading the images on social networks. Multiple tourists come to this place and many make “memes” in reference to the name of this village, located in the province of Lugo.

The origin of such a peculiar name comes from the word “Penius”, a famous man who decided to baptize this place with his own name. The town has been the victim of a great number of jokes, although it really has nothing to do with the virile member.

Guarromán, Jaén (Andalusia)

The word “piggy” refers to a person with few hygiene habits, something that makes the name of this town extremely particular and even more so to its inhabitants. The “Guarromanenses” are the subject of all kinds of jokes. In reality, this particular place name is an evolution and Castilianization of “Wadi-r-Rumman” (river of pomegranates)

In this town the International Association of Peoples with strange names in the world was born. The main headquarters of this organization, obviously, is in Guarromán, so the inhabitants take the strange name of their town very seriously.

The Hells (Murcia)

There are those who can say, we do not know if with pride, that he was born or that he lives in the very hell, and not because of an eternal damnation. If this Murcian town catches your attention, don’t worry, you won’t run into the devil wanting to steal your soul. In fact, it is a fairly quiet place where you can live a good life. From the capital of Murcia you will find Los Infierno about 40 kilometers to the southeast.

It is not known with certainty who gave this place its name or why.  Perhaps it is because of the intense heat that it does here in summer, the high temperatures that are registered in Los Infierno are sometimes unbearable. Therefore, if you are interested in visiting it, better in winter.

Garlic (Cantabria)

Some say that this town is called this way because its streets smelled of garlic.  Apparently, its inhabitants liked this product excessively. True or not, it is something that may catch the attention of garlic fanatics and others, it just scares them away.

But, regardless of its name, if there is something that draws attention to this area of Cantabria, it is for its incredible landscapes. Ajo is located on the Cantabrian coast, in an area where there are fantastic beaches.

Ajo is, therefore, a good place to stay and enjoy the sea and a beautiful town with a strange name.

A very long list

But the list of towns with a curious or surprising name is much longer. The inhabitants of Villalibre de la Jurisdiccción, in León, are not fugitives from justice. Perhaps those of the Diosleguarde in Salamanca are not especially religious either. And maybe those from Guasa, in Huesca, don’t like jokes too much.

Do you want to know some more names? Here they go: Contamina or Novallas in Zaragoza, Parderrubias in Pontevedra, Aldeaquemada in Jaén or Nonduermas in Murcia. Curious don’t you think?
