The beginnings of Port de la Selva as a tourist town must be sought at the beginning of the 20th century. It was in the 1920s when a group of intellectuals discovered the town. Since then, its beauty and magic have conquered the hearts of more and more visitors. Now you too have the possibility to discover its secrets. Are you going to miss them?

What to visit in Port de la Selva

Port de la Selva is home to several must-see monuments. The main attraction is the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, a monumental complex of enormous beauty. It is a Cultural Asset of National Interest and is located on top of a mountain from which you can see the sea.

Architecturally, it is in the Romanesque style and consists of the church, the sacristies, the bell tower, the cloister, the conventional rooms for living and the abbot’s palace.

One of his sculptures, the image of Sant Pere, was moved inside the church of Santa María de les Neus, built during the first half of the 20th century. It consists of a Latin cross plan and inside there is a main altar in the shape of a trapezoid.

Equally interesting is the castle of Verdera, whose ruins serve as a refuge for various birds that have built their nests in them. And it is that the fortification remains a lot to resemble what it was initially. Even so, the central rectangular tower and the walls with seven towers stand out.

Somewhat far from the municipality there are also some megalithic remains, such  as the Mores Altas dolmens or the Pallera paradolmen. You will also see several remains of popular architecture (the Canavall tile oven or the Corral de la Almeda oven, among others).

Once the previous monuments have been visited, Port de la Selva offers other alternatives, starting with the hiking trails. One of the most recommended is the Camino de Ronda, a route that borders the coast of the Costa Brava and allows you to enjoy the scenic beauty of this coastal area.

The Camino de Ronda can be started and ended at different points, but starting from Port de la Selva, a good itinerary is the one that runs towards Llançà. Both municipalities are only two hours apart, but the laziest can always travel by car.

Either way or another, you must pass by the s’Arenella lighthouse, from which you can see the last foothills of the Pyrenees over the sea. An image of enormous beauty.

We would not be talking about Port de la Selva if we did not name its beaches. Some are made of sand, such as Platja D’en Robert or Platja Port De La Vall. But others are gravel (Platja Dels Vaquers, Platja La Ribera) or pebbles (Platja El Pas). There are also multiple options regarding the coves: Cala Prona, Cala Torta, Cala Tamariua …

For those who spend the whole day lying on the beach is not in their plans,  here you can practice water skiing, swimming or rowing. Activities that can be carried out perfectly in a sea that is usually calm. It is also ideal for windsurfing, especially when the north wind blows.
