Do you know the word that best defines Slovenia? Green! Half of its territory is made up of forests and natural parks. But also, this beautiful country has a lot to offer … for all ages and tastes. In this article we show you why you should consider it as one of your next destinations.

Slovenia falls in love

Although it may seem like an advertising slogan, it is the truth. As soon as you arrive in the country you will be amazed by its landscapes. Both those places of wild beauty and those that have been changed by man have the capacity to be unforgettable.

Slovenia has no less than 45 natural parks and 3 regional parks where you can practice all kinds of sports: hiking, cycling, caving, kayaking, climbing, etc. With only 2 million inhabitants, this country is a paradise of mountains, forests, vineyards, coasts and caves.

In Slovenian lands there are about ten thousand caves (only in the Karst area) that were formed millions of years ago. To the northwest we find the fantastic Alps, to the southwest the small coast that flows into the Adriatic Sea and in the northeast the spas and thermal centers surrounded by vineyards (which are also present in the southeast).

Reasons to visit Slovenia

If you still need more reasons to choose Slovenia as your next destination, we can tell you for example that it is an excellent link between Croatia, Hungary, Austria and Italy. Also that its gastronomy has taken a lot from these countries throughout history.

If you are not one of those people who likes to go to a beach full of people, its coasts can be almost deserted even in high season,  since it is not such a massive destination.

In terms of infrastructure, the roads and railways stand out. You can travel the entire country by car or train with the greatest comfort.  And also, Slovenia is one of the cheapest countries in Eastern Europe.

Ljubljana, capital and perfect

This city has been widely influenced by Austria. The architecture of the streets of the Slovenian capital dates back to the Austro-Hungarian era and features colorful facades, sculptures and somewhat “loaded” decorations.

From almost anywhere in Ljubljana we can see the medieval castle built on a nearby hill, with the aim of defending the empire from any invasion and peasant revolts. To get there today there is a funicular. We recommend the visit to learn about its long history.

In the lower part of the city, get lost in its streets, have a coffee or a beer and watch the hours go by in this quiet European corner.

Slovenia’s most attractive

During your visit to the country you cannot miss the oldest vine in the world, in the town of Maribor. You should also visit the Secovije salt flats, the Vintgar gorge or Lake Bled, of glacial origin and two thousand meters long at almost 500 meters above sea level.

The highest mountain is called Triglav, which means “three heads” for the three peaks seen from the Bohinj valley. The importance of this mountain is such that it appears on the national shield.

And if we talk about cities, Piran is one of the most famous towns in Slovenia, surrounded by walls and with Venetian-medieval-style buildings. Its narrow streets are erected in a staggered manner on a slope. The name of the place derives from the pyres that were lit to guide the sailors.

Be sure to try seafood, fish or pasta on the terraces of the main square, surrounded by buildings dating from the 15th century.

Near the town there is a hill where the Church of San Jorge was built. When you reach the top, you also take the opportunity to enjoy the panoramic views of the Italian and Croatian coast.

Finally, if you like to learn about the culture of the places you visit, we recommend being present at some of the traditional celebrations : the Kurentovanje Carnival in Ptuj, Easter in Skofja Loka and the grape harvest during San Marín.
