Niagara Falls, A Great Spectacle
Niagara Falls is located on the United States border with Canada, 650 kilometers from New York. A fantastic waterfall 54 meters high, 1,000 meters wide and classified as one of the most important natural attractions in the world. Do you want to meet her?
Legends about Niagara Falls
Legends say that this place was discovered by Indian tribes. They had a lot of respect for the falls, since they believed that in the cave of Horseshoe Falls, in the Canadian part of Niagara Falls, resided the god of thunder, HE-NO .
The chief of the tribe gave one of his soldiers the hand of his daughter Lelawala, but she disobeyed her father’s orders and left. Lelawala wanted to give his soul to the god of thunder, so he took a canoe and launched himself by one of the waterfalls of Niagara Falls. Legend states that the god decided to save his soul and Lelawala remained by his side at the waterfall.
Many people have taken to the falls to obtain fame, money or recognition. In 1829 Sam Patch was the first, at least that is known, to survive such recklessness. In 1901, a 60-year-old, Annie Edison jumped into a wooden barrel and lived to tell the tale, but the truth is that most of those who tried ended up dying.
Enjoying Niagara Falls
The most iconic attractions of Niagara Falls are in the Canadian part, which is much more touristy than the American one. From its viewpoints you can contemplate sublime views of the landscape, both of the Herradura or Horseshoe waterfall and of the minor American waterfalls, which are quite a sight to behold.
In addition to the easily accessible and landscaped Niagara Riverfront walk that allows you to observe the Niagara Falls landscape, the Canadian side offers numerous hotels, casinos and a variety of tourist attractions. In the different streets there are some museums, restaurants, electronic games rooms and various shops.
The views from the American side of the falls are, perhaps less spectacular, but also much more relaxed. However, the best advice is to admire the falls from both sides.
The best time to enjoy the shows is in the morning or at sunset. At this time you can enjoy beautiful rainbows that are formed by the fall of the water. At night there is another view of Niagara Falls, since the different colored lights offer a spectacle to behold.
How to get to Niagara Falls?
This natural spectacle is located 3 hours away by car from the city of Toronto, in Canada, and about 9 hours from New York. In addition, Niagara Falls is accessible by plane, to the Buffalo Airport. However, there is a closer airport called Niagara Falls, although it receives few flights since it is much smaller.
Regarding transportation, there are several options such as taking a taxi or going to the bus stop, but the best alternative is to rent a car to get to know both the American part and the Canadian area of Niagara City.
To access the Canadian part of Niagara Falls you must have a valid passport and perhaps a visa that the authorities will ask for. The trip from Buffalo Airport to the falls takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
The best time to visit this fantastic place is from May to October, although this is the time when the greatest number of visitors will arrive.
