The Archena spa can boast of being one of the thermal complexes with the most history, since its origin dates back to the 5th century BC It was used, both by the Iberian settlers settled in the Murcian municipality, and by the merchants who were passing through . Its prestige was due to the medicinal properties of its waters, which did not go unnoticed by the Romans either.

However, the spa’s boom occurred during the Middle Ages, when it passed into the hands of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Already consolidated as one of the best in Spain, Fernando VII ordered to undertake a series of reforms: increase its rooms and fix the road that linked Archena with the spa. These would be followed by more until reaching their current configuration.

The thermal complex of the Archena spa is made up of three spa hotels: the Hotel León, the Hotel Levante and the Hotel Termas, which translates into two hundred and fifty-four fully equipped rooms, with restaurant service and direct access to the spas. Hence, they are recognized with the Quality Seal of the Spanish Tourism Quality Institute.

Special mention must be made of the four-star Hotel Termas, since it preserves part of the decoration of the last century in neo-Nasrid style. The dome, the Roman tombstone from the end of the 1st century and, at the entrance to the baths, the fountain of the Lions stand out. The latter is an exact replica of the one in the Patio de los Leones in the Alhambra in Granada.

Likewise, the hotels are joined by swimming pools, both indoor and outdoor; Jacuzzis, waterfalls and facilities designed for the little ones to enjoy. And it is that the Archena spa is built on a vast area of 3,000 m², which is surrounded by idyllic gardens of lemon and orange trees, on the banks of the river Segura.

This carries out an exhaustive follow-up of each of the clients to prescribe the appropriate thermal treatment, such as the so-called “Archena massage”, a variety of massage that is performed under showers of mineral-medicinal water and in which mud is used.

Other treatments that visitors can benefit from, whether they  hire accommodation or not,  are beauty treatments, such as a facelift or lymphatic drainage; the application of thermal mud; assisted aquatic relaxation; or short or couple massages.

The mineral-medicinal water of the Archena spa was declared of public utility in 1869. It emanates from the spring at a temperature of 52.5 ºC, and has numerous properties, due to its mineral elements, which have remained underground for about fifteen thousand years . Hence, it is an excellent natural remedy for various physical conditions and, in general, to restore the well-being of the body.

More specifically, the water from the Archena spa is recommended for rheumatism, pain of vertebral origin and recovery from post-traumatic sequelae and trauma surgery. It is also suitable for respiratory system disorders, for certain dermatological processes, as well as for the elimination of anxiety and stress.
