In Mexico there are wonderful cathedrals. We are going to know some of the most important and the most beautiful in the country.

The cathedrals of Mexico are a sample of the cultural richness of this country, a country in which artistic elements typical of European styles are mixed with others of indigenous culture. For this reason, each of the temples in Mexico has its own differentiating elements, sometimes unique contrasts that give them an original appearance. 

1. Cathedrals of Mexico : Metropolitan Cathedral

We begin our tour of the cathedrals of Mexico in its capital. The Metropolitan Cathedral began to be built in 1573, but it was not completed until 1813. Almost three hundred years of works that resulted in a wonderful building in which various styles such as Herreriano, Baroque, Churrigueresque and Ochavado intermingle.

It is built in homage to the Virgin Asunción de María. Its towers and beautiful façade stand out from its exterior. Inside, it is worth mentioning the altar of the Kings and the Altar of Forgiveness, as well as the sacristy and the crypt.

2. Cathedral of Morelia

This cathedral is visible from anywhere in Morelia, as its towers reach 65 meters in height, making it one of the tallest cathedrals in Mexico. Built in pink stone, it dates from the seventeenth century and is in the Baroque style.

From it the reliefs of the portals can be highlighted, which represent the life of Christ.  It is also worth highlighting the importance of its organ, one of the most important in the country. And a tip: visit it during the day and also at night, its lighting is spectacular.

3. Cathedral of the Assumption of Holy Mary

Located in Guadalajara, in Jalisco, it is an imposing neo-Gothic building built in the 16th century. Fifty years were necessary to build one of the most threatened cathedrals in Mexico, which has had to be rebuilt several times.

One of the worst events it has suffered occurred in 1818, when an earthquake caused the towers and dome to fall. Other earthquakes have been undermining the structure of the temple, as well as traffic. Something that can be seen in the slight inclination of one of its towers.

4. Zacatecas Cathedral

Built in pink quarry stone, it is undoubtedly the most characteristic monument in the town’s beautiful Plaza de Armas. It dates from the 18th century and stands in the same place where previously there were two churches.

It is also dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, whom Mexicans venerate. Its baroque style is very peculiar, as it is originally from the Zacatecas area and is even more exuberant than the classical baroque. This combines perfectly with the neoclassical style of its interior.

5. Chihuahua Cathedral

It is the main cathedral in the region and is dedicated to Francisco de Asís and Nuestra Señora de la Regla. Like many other cathedrals in Mexico, it was built in the 18th century and is carved in ocher-colored quarry stone.

The style in which it was erected is baroque in its entirety and its main facade stands out, which is carved with attention to detail. A marvel that you have to stop for a few minutes to admire.

6. Puebla Cathedral

Many experts in architecture and art say that this, without a doubt, is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the entire American continent. Built in the Herrerian style, the works were carried out between the 16th and 17th centuries.

From the outside, its towers, its two domes and its façades stand out. Be it day or night, when it is illuminated, it is a delight to behold.  Inside, in addition to admiring the altarpieces and the choir, you have to pay attention to the enormous amount of works of art that it keeps.

7. Querétaro Cathedral

In tezontle red color, we find this beautiful building in Querétaro dating from the 18th century. It is made up of a single nave and its baroque style is peculiarly beautiful, standing  out thanks to the color of the stone with which it is built.

These are just some of the most impressive cathedrals in Mexico, but the country is full of wonderful temples. Therefore, if you are a lover of religious buildings, you will have a lot to do in this country.
