Medina del Campo : prehistoric, ancient and medieval
The history of Medina del Campo is more than long. This area was already inhabited during the Neolithic. The pieces found demonstrate this, as well as the permanence of groups of people in the Chalcolithic, characterized by the use of bronze.

1. The Castle of La Mota
It was built in the 12th century and later expanded. It is a fundamental pillar during the Spanish Middle Ages and draws attention for its reddish color (because brick was used).
The Torre del Homenaje, about 40 meters high, is one of the largest in all of Europe and is part of this impressive architectural ensemble.
The castle is located on an elevation of the terrain and allows you to enjoy panoramic views of the entire villa. The protective walls of which we can see some remains began from its sides.
2. Palace of the Dueñas
It is a Renaissance-style building from the 16th century and has been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. The orders to erect said residence were from Diego Beltrán. To design the plans, he hired the architect of King Carlos I, Luis de la Vega.
It has two square floors and a small tower in one of its corners. The cloister and the coffered ceiling are two points of great beauty in the palace.
3. Collegiate Church of San Antolín
Another of the most important buildings in Medina del Campo and is located near the Plaza Mayor. It is in the Gothic style, although other artistic and architectural manifestations also converge.
Construction began in the 16th century and ended in the 18th. It also had later modifications (for example in 1903 the chapel was remodeled).
This work by Juan Gil de Hontañón guards the Banner of the Catholic Monarchs and inside we can also find altarpieces and Renaissance paintings. The chapels, the organ and the choir stalls are worthy of admiration.
4. Chapel of San Juan de la Cruz
It bears that name because it was the place where he celebrated the first mass, in August 1568. The saint’s brother, Francisco de Yepes, was buried in this place.
Although on the outside it is not too strikingly decorated, the interior will leave you speechless thanks to its paintings on the ceiling and walls with 16th century canvases that relate the religious life of Saint John of the Cross.
5. Plaza Mayor de la Hispanidad
In this place the famous fairs were held where merchants from the nearby regions came to sell their products. These events helped Medina del Campo in particular, and Castilla in general, develop.
Around the square are the Collegiate Church, the Royal Palace, the City Hall and the monument to Isabel la Católica, who died in the city in 1504.
